In this post we will be continuing on the topic: A Victorious Christian Life. Last time we noted that having a victorious Christian life is based on having a proper Christian foundation.
All proper foundations must be laid according to the builders plan. The builder designs the foundation to suit the building that is to be erected on it. Buildings are built so that people can live in them. This is the same in the spiritual, we lay a proper foundation in order to erect a solid spiritual building so that God could dwell in us via his Holy Spirit.
“Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16 NLT
It is only when we are built on a proper spiritual foundation, only then can the Holy Spirit of God dwell in us. A spiritual foundation requires certain elements to make it proper. So a proper spiritual foundation should be
- Based on the word of God
“Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”” 2 Timothy 2:19 NIV
- Based on righteousness
“The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land.” Proverbs 10:30 NIV
- Firm
“In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.” 1 Timothy 6:19 NIV
Built on the rock
“Do not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other Rock; I know not one.”” Isaiah 44:8 NIV
And the rock is Jesus Christ
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 3:11 NIV
If we take a closer look at 2 Timothy 2:19 there two important facts about a proper foundation
- Christian men: The Lord knows those who are his
- Live victorious lives: Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.
Many of us have been so caught up in our religious antics that we consider them to be the foundation for our Christian beliefs. The foundation for our Christian living is not a denomination or a religious ceremony or any man-made creed. NO! The foundation for our Christian living should be Jesus Christ, why? Because he was chosen by God to be the foundation
“So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.” Isaiah 28:16 NIV
Also we try to build great spiritual structures in our Christian lives, we become so involved with the church, we attend all the church programs. Some churches also encourages this by planning many programs, they say it is to build and improve the lives of their members but sometimes it is also to return a favour to the pastor they invited. For example If pastor A is holding a program and then invites pastor B from another country or even the same country. His church looks after pastor B, takes care of him and gives him an honorarium. The next time pastor A is in pastor B’s country or the next time pastor B is holding a program he has to invite pastor A because if he doesn’t there is likelihood that pastor A would not invite him again.
This happens a lot in many churches today, so instead of filling the lives of the members with the word of God, they fill their lives with church programs and activities and their members get so involved that they begin to mistake attending these programs and activities for good Christian living. On the outside their spiritual building looks good but on the inside their foundation is not solid and before long the building will collapse and sink. The become discouraged, defeated, and fall into sin, all because of their spiritual lives has been built on the wrong foundation.
It is important to note that over time our Christian work will be put to the test and the structure of our spiritual lives will be examined to determine what foundation it was built on and all foundation not built on Christ will not last.
“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.” 1 Corinthians 3:11-13 NIV
A victorious Christian life is when we are done with intentional sin, has stopped pleasing ourselves and the world and wants to obey God for the rest of our lives
“SO, SINCE Christ suffered in the flesh for us, for you, arm yourselves with the same thought and purpose [patiently to suffer rather than fail to please God]. For whoever has suffered in the flesh [having the mind of Christ] is done with [intentional] sin [has stopped pleasing himself and the world, and pleases God], So that he can no longer spend the rest of his natural life living by [his] human appetites and desires, but [he lives] for what God wills.” 1 Peter 4:1-2 AMP
So if we keep substituting a proper foundation for church programs, events and activities in order to keep up attendance. (No one really wants to hear the truth these days so they are promised excitement in order to keep them coming back.) We will never really be able to live a true victorious life.
