It is Gods will for us as Christians to live a victorious Christian life but for many of us this has proven difficult. Why is this? Why do we find it difficult to live victoriously since this is Gods will for us in the beginning?
“God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”” Genesis 1:28 NIV
And it is still the will of God for us today
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers.” 3 John 1:2 AMP
To find the answer to the question we have to take a close look at the book of Hebrews chapter 6 verses 1-3
“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And God permitting, we will do so.” Hebrews 6:1-3 NIV
We can see that from Hebrews chapter 6 verses 1-3 two spiritual objectives has been set out by the writer
- Is that we have to build our spiritual life on a high foundation which is Jesus Christ.
- The needed for every Christian to move onto perfection (spiritual maturity)
There are two reasons why someone would fail to live a victorious Christian life
- Some who is trying to live like Christians but was never truly born again so they lack the proper foundation
- Many of us Christians fail to move onto spiritual maturity
Hebrews chapter 6 verses.1-3 lists out what the foundation of a Christian should look like and the list follows
- Repentance from dead work
- Faith in God
- Doctrine on baptism
- Laying on of hands
- Resurrection of the dead
- Eternal judgement.
These are the six foundational doctrines that every believer need if we are to move onto perfection. However, the purpose of this post is not to take us through these doctrine, maybe in a later date but to make us aware of the importance of a proper foundation for a victorious Christian life.
The apostle Paul in the New Testament compared the life of a believer to a building. We can see this in the book of 1 Corinthians
“For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building.” 1 Corinthians 3:9 NIV
When believer come together to worship or fellowship with each other we form the church. The church is also compared to as a building
“And you are part of that building Christ has built as a place for God’s own Spirit to live.” Ephesians 2:22 CEVDCUS06
To erect any form of building a proper foundation must be laid, we have foundations for houses and we have foundation for skyscrapers. It would be very dangerous for a foundation allocated for house to be used to build a skyscraper. It may stand for a while but after a few years and the test of time it will come crumbling down.
Another important thing we need to note when building is where we lay the foundation. Jesus gave a good example of this in one of his parables
““Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”” Matthew 7:24-27 NLT
A believer must have a proper foundation in order to build a good spiritual house.
After I became born again my life changed very quickly. My best friend’s brother at the time was visiting from America. He advised me to try to come back to the United Kingdom since I was born here. So I started the process of getting my British passport and because of this I had travel between three different locations. My high institutions (The Institute of Management and Technology Enugu), my home in Asaba and my sister house in Lagos. I was also attending three different churches in these three different locations, the fellowship on campus, Church of God Mission Asaba and the Great God Ministries which is pastored by my brother-in-law and my sister. They all recognise that as a new believer and I needed a proper foundation. However, I never stayed long enough in anyone these locations to complete any of their foundational training.
After a few years of being a Christian I began to struggle. I was eager to learn so I study the bible on my own; I read so many Christian books and when I arrived in the UK throw myself into the work of God. When I arrived in the UK I join the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and because of my spiritual level at the time no one noticed that my foundation was lacking until I began to struggle spiritual. I remember someone saying to me that she thinks I’m growing too fast and too quickly. At first I did not understand what she meant but I know I had asked God for help.
One Sunday while teaching in the children’s church one of the sisters in church approached me and asked if I had done believer class. This was the class for new Christian or believers who have newly join the RCCG. I did not consider myself a new believer because I had born again for over two years and I was not a new member of the church because I had been with the church going on two years. I said no. She said I would need to do it, at first I said no. At my spiritual level I could have probably taught the class myself but I heard something say to me do it. So I did it and that was exactly what I need at the time. Lessons were not something I not read on my own but to having someone teach it to me was an experience on its own. Since then I found myself once in while always going back to these foundational doctrines.
The starting point for a victorious Christian life is having the right foundation
